A few years ago, I was head over heels for Political Guy, a DC man who could talk about foreign policy for hours. He would compliment me, take an interest in my opinions, and call me right after seeing me… but he never asked me out on a proper date. Political Guy was polished, composed, and analytical to the point of distraction.

I was hooked on him for months. On paper, we seemed like a good match. People would try to set us up if they didn’t know we knew each other. It was awkward to explain that we did, and that I was just waiting for him to make a damn move. Everyone knows how this story ends. I dodged a bullet.

When I look back on Political Guy, who still messages me every now and then, probably hoping he’s still on my mind, I can see all the red flags I somehow missed. If anything, at least he taught me more about spotting danger than all of the men I’ve dated combined. I should have known, but I was blinded by spectacle.

I am not the first woman to fall for a man in a well-fitted suit, and I won’t be the last. As I got home tonight after talking with a friend about my last relationship– a man who was nothing like Political Guy– I couldn’t stop watching another man in a well-fitted suit.
