Postponing a Move to Israel for a Just Cause

Because of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, my daughter’s return to Israel has been indefinitely postponed.

How’s that for an attention-grabbing opening sentence.

Ricki, a lawyer who grew up and was educated in Israel, and her husband Shimi, a physician specializing in pain management and rehabilitative medicine, were married a year-and-a-half ago and currently reside and work in Denver, Colorado. Plans were being made to relocate their lives to Israel, something that my wife and I were very much looking forward to. The two intended to come on an exploratory trip after the summer to see where they would feel most comfortable living and to become familiar with the logistics involved in transferring to Israel his license to practice medicine. They fully expected to make the permanent transition within a year.

And then came the Democratic primaries for the US House of Representatives.

Pundits have expressed, justly, concern over the triumphs of the Mamdani-backed Democratic Socialists in New York City and how their victories in the November elections might affect not only the relations between the United States and Israel but the security and well-being of New York’s Jewish community as well. Less noted, however, is that at least one other Mamdani protégé from outside of the Big Apple, too, came out a winner in a Democratic primary for the House.

The Coloradoan Melat Kiros, a Democratic Socialist who openly expresses her opposition to United States support for Israel, unreservedly accuses Israel of genocide, and refuses to condemn acts of terrorism, including the October 7 massacre, was elected to run as the Democrat candidate for the First Congressional District in Denver.
