Western Journalism Has a Hamas Problem
Israel is a fascist, colonialist, apartheid state conducting a campaign of genocide. Hamas are Palestinian freedom fighters. These twisted notions are widespread and growing but who is promoting them?
The painful answer is not just the unchecked landscape of social media but US and British journalism. Transatlantic news titans are responsible for much of the public’s skewed worldview.
The New York Times has reframed Hamas as Palestinian liberators. This is not a recent phenomenon but deeply rooted in their reporting. Since 1992, the paper has used the language “Islamic militant group” rather than terrorists, the correct assessment. For context, the US government designated Hamas a terrorist organization back in 1997.
A recent article magnified their bias. Hamas, the Times argued, was taking “a big risk” on the ceasefire and hostage release agreement. What about Israel freeing hundreds of convicted terrorists who will likely return to violence? The tone and perspective expressed sympathy for Hamas. Murders, kidnappers, and rapists is what they are.
The intellectual war journalists launched against Israel is visual, too. Back on July 25, the Times published an image of an emaciated Palestinian boy on the front page to reinforce the distorted allegations of genocide by starvation.
The Times did not verify their information before demonizing Israel. Eighteen-month-old Mohammed Zakaria al-Mutawaq suffered from a genetic disorder. The paper’s website correction and post on X of the child’s “pre-existing condition” did........
