Price wasn’t racist, but she did expose what turns off voters

Shortly before the 2024 US election, Elon Musk went on The Joe Rogan Experience. “If Trump doesn’t win,” the entrepreneur told the podcaster, “this is the last election.”

Musk’s theory was that Democrats bring in immigrants without permission to settle in the US. They deliberately send these “illegal aliens”, as they are described over there, to shore up electoral support in states that swing between voting Republican and Democrat.

“If the Democrat[ic] Party wants to win, like basically achieve permanent victory, all they need to do is turn the swing states,” Musk said. “Turn the swing states blue, they have permanent victory … then we’re a one-party state and then they will keep doing that obviously.”

There are clear parallels to the concerns expressed by Liberal senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price on Patricia Karvelas’ ABC podcast last week.

“Labor,” the senator said, “would like to be able to ensure that they’re going to allow those in that would ultimately support their policies, their views – and vote for them as well.”

Price’s words have created a firestorm within the Coalition, coming as they did so soon after the anti-immigration March for Australia singled out Indian immigration........
