In the post-Joyce Qantas world, there was always going to be a forensic investigation of his strategy decisions. To overturn former boss Alan Joyce’s captain’s call to create and then keep Jetstar Asia alive for more than 20 years was a no-brainer.
The real head-scratcher was why this intra-Asian budget airline wasn’t closed a decade ago.

In its 20 years of operation, Jetstar Asia managed to make a profit in only six years. Over its life, this business lost more than it ever made.
A board review of governance in the wake of the controversial departure of Alan Joyce found that he exercised a “control and command” style of management that led to centralised decision-making. This phrasing amounts to sanitised business speak for – Qantas was Joyce’s show.
And Jetstar Asia, which operated out of Singapore and flew low-cost services to other Asian destinations, was one of his babies.
