Alexandra Paskhaver: On Call
I hate being on call.
First, I have to clarify I work for a software company. I don’t get paged in the same way a doctor does when there’s a medical emergency.
My situation’s worse. At the end of the day, a doctor can at least luxuriate in the feeling that they have saved a life.
That they have contributed to the preservation of humanity.
That they have done, in a word, good.
I get paged when our site, for some reason, no longer supports language translations into French.
I say this with all goodwill and harmony: screw the French!
The French don’t need translations. Most of them know English, anyway, and that’s what our website’s written in.
I always get paged at 3:14 in the morning.
As if the French have anything better to do with their time than cause problems for us Americans.
