Anduril’s new “Thunder” drone, unveiled at the Farnsborough Air Show earlier in the week, offers a fundamentally different vision for the future of Army aviation.

Rather than replace helicopters outright, the Thunder represents the pairing of autonomous aircraft with helicopters. A hybrid-electric tiltrotor UAV belonging to “Group 5”—the Pentagon’s largest drone category, alongside full-sized attack drones like the MQ-9 Reaper—the Thunder was developed with Archer Aviation and designed to accompany the AH-64 Apache attack helicopter and future MV-75 Cheyenne II tiltrotor into contested airspace.
