Silence on Druze massacres in Syria echoes silence on the Holocaust

Since July 13, more than 1,120 Druze civilians have been slaughtered in southern Syria. These were not casualties of war. They were executed in their homes, hospitals and places of worship. Men were dragged from their beds, thrown from balconies and shot in front of their families. This is not a war. It is a campaign of targeted extermination, the choreography of genocide. Just as the world did when Hitler rose to power and began his campaign of terror against the Jews, the international community and most global press agencies are once again watching in silence.

These attacks, perpetrated by Islamists loyal to and part of the defense forces of Syria’s interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa, are not driven by political rebellion but by a deliberate effort to erase the Druze from their homeland. In the city of Sweida, sacred shrines have been defiled. Entire neighborhoods have been looted. Druze elders have been forced at gunpoint to shave their mustaches, symbols of dignity and tradition. Verified video footage shows civilians pushed from rooftops while armed militants cheer and record the deaths. In Sweida National Hospital, medics and patients were shot dead side by side.
