The body of a missing Schenectady-area man was recovered from Great Sacandaga Lake Monday morning, Fulton County Sheriff Richard Giardino said.
The victim, who has been described as in his early 20s, was recovered by the New York State Police Dive Team off the Broadalbin Boat Launch, Giardino said.
The man was not immediately identified in a release.
The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office Sonar Unit located the body just before 10 a.m. and the dive team recovered it within minutes.
A woman, who appeared to be in her early 20s, went underwater while rafting, Giardino said late Sunday night. She was rescued by a couple on a pontoon boat.
Her boyfriend attempted to swim out from shore to rescue her and did not make it out of the water, the sheriff said.
It appeared that the young man and woman were on the lake enjoying the conclusion of the 4th of July weekend, when the woman began experiencing some difficulty with the small float-tube-type rafting device, which may have overturned, Giardino said then.
Giardino Monday morning thanked the good Samaritans who stopped to rescue the woman and recover the small rafting vessel.
Responding to the scene were the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, state Department of Environmental Conservation, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, rangers, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Swift Boat Response Team, the Broadalbin-Kenyetto Fire Department and multiple other Fire Departments as well as Fulton County Emergency Management Office Director Steve Santa Maria and Mark Souza, along with EMS.
The Great Sacandaga Lake drowning followed a drowning Friday on Lake George and the death of a jet-skier on Great Sacandaga Lake June 23 after the jet-ski struck a boat, also near the Broadalbin Boat Launch.
