A fire broke out at the Knights Inn in Amsterdam Saturday evening.

The two story building at 1351 Route 5S, suffered total loss of some of its units.

Amsterdam Fire and Police Department representatives were not immediately available for comment.

According to a social media statement by Amsterdam Deputy Mayor Christopher Carpenter, the fire department contained the “devastating” fire “swiftly” and the incident displaced many people.

Two bottom-floor units in the corner away from NY 5S, units 129 and 130, appeared destroyed Sunday. Units 128 and 127 took smoke damage, and the upstairs units 229 and 230 were uninhabited but appeared intact. Units 126, 125, 228 and 227 were closed off.

Employees were removing salvageable items from Unit 130 on Sunday morning, and though the owner was contacted, they declined to comment.

Community members on social media, including nearby gift shop The Nook, encouraged people affected to reach out for clothing, food and hygiene products they may need replaced.

“Pray for everyone involved because tomorrow is never guaranteed, and one spark can change our lives forever,” Carpenter wrote.
