We can’t let freedom and democracy die
Nicholas Riccard of the Associated Press reports that half of American adults believe that our democracy is functioning very or moderately poorly.
Few of those polled believe the country’s leaders are committed to democratic governance or that government decisions reflect the will of the people.
Ken Burns’ series on the Revolutionary War invited us into watching the messy process of our country becoming a democracy. Many lost their lives fighting for freedom. There was confusion and disagreement among the colonies. After death and destruction, democracy was born. It was a long deadly battle for the freedom we enjoy today.
As I reflect on our democracy, I see a country where the desire for freedom is waning. Have we become complacent and lazy? If so, we will hand over our freedom to the greed of the very wealthy.
