The Parades Commission has taken a wrecking ball to power-sharing

Let me be blunt. This current Parades Commission is a complete failure.

The commissioners have turned a process lapse into a judgemental catastrophe.

Professor Collins and her colleagues should resign immediately. They’ve proven they’re simply not up to the job and have undone decades of good work by previous commissions in just 72 hours.

Now the courts have taken a mess and managed to make it a tragedy.

Watch as seemingly settled disputes unravel across the north. This may not manifest until next year, but the pot has been set on boiling.

Bad actors from both communities will step in to ramp up tensions.

The Parades Commissioners have gifted life support to splintered dissident groups and far-right loyalists to agitate at whim.

This will both stretch police resources and undermine the painstakingly hard work of community relations workers at interface areas.

The reversal of their own previous decision is both inexplicable and reckless.

The original determination was something they agreed was right, but they mucked up the process.

What could have changed in a few weeks to undo 28 years of a successful monitored and working settlement?

The Parades Commission seemingly thinks the public (and the nationalist community) have forgotten the image of Paisley with Trimble hand in hand in an exercise of supremacy, sectarian coat-trailing and gloating triumphalism – after a previously negotiated settlement.

Frankly, no one is up for a re-run.
