ONE of the unintended consequences of my decision to delete my X/Twitter account and sign up to its rival Bluesky is that my timeline is filled with posts from the liberal left in the United States.
When I begin my morning doomscrolling, my mood inevitably darkens as they rail against the latest actions of the Orange Man Baby, his bloodthirsty Secretary for War, and his vaccine-denying Secretary for Ill-Health. I am living the American nightmare, albeit vicariously.
If I wasn’t already sick (third bout of man flu this season), I’d be chucking the phone in the bin, crawling into bed and pulling the duvet over my head.
As a coping mechanism, keeping your head down and waiting for regime change is often a viable option.

I’ve seen that tactic work. Indeed, it was one of the ways decent Americans (yes, there are many) survived the first Trump administration. And this time around there are signs that change may be in the air.
Trump may be chuffed by his fake peace prize from FIFA, but by-elections are not all going his way and his rankings are tanking in the opinion polls.
