I was driving over the border from Derry into the heart of Inishowen on Monday evening, listening to the radio, when they did a lengthy segment on Donald Trump’s intervention over the red card imposed on American soccer star Folarin Balogun at the World Cup. It was absolutely riveting.

Unless you have been living under a rock, you are probably aware that his red card meant the AS Monaco player couldn’t turn out for his country’s crucial match on Monday against Belgium.

At a press conference, Trump openly admitted he had asked FIFA president Gianni Infantino to review the decision, stating: “All I did, I asked for a review, because I didn’t think it was a foul, and, you know again, I’m good at this stuff.”

Earlier in the same exchange, he claimed he was a good athlete – he’s also, according to himself, a great negotiator, deal-maker, builder, tax expert, great at reading people, a great communicator, golfer and whatever your having yourself – stating: “I understand sports really well, really well...”
