Watch live: Jeffries gives remarks amid DHS funding battle
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) will speak with reporters Thursday morning, more than a month after funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) lapsed.
Jeffries and other House Democrats on Wednesday formally launched their bid to fund the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and other non-immigration enforcement agencies amid the impasse.
Democratic leaders have also rejected another counteroffer from the White House, which included expanding the use of body cameras and limiting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids near “sensitive locations,” calling the latest proposal from the administration “inadequate.”
The House passed legislation to reopen the department earlier this month, but Democrats in the Senate continue to block its movement. Republicans have leaned in on the U.S. military operation in Iran to pressure their Democratic colleagues to get on board, with little to no movement.
The press conference is scheduled to begin at 10:45 a.m. EDT.
