Warner on deadly Iranian girls’ school strike: ‘I want a thorough investigation’
Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) on Sunday discussed a recent strike on an Iranian girls’ school, saying he desires “a thorough investigation” into the matter.
“We’ve only got preliminary assessments, and I want a thorough investigation. But what I don’t want to do is jump to the conclusion, whether it was [U.S. Central Command (Centcom)] or whether it was Defense Intelligence Agency. Let’s — that’s what thorough investigations are supposed to be for. Clearly, it was an American strike. I, again, feel a little disappointed that the president tried to deny that at first or say it was even the Iranians,” Warner told CBS News’s Margaret Brennan on “Face the Nation.”
According to preliminary findings from an ongoing military investigation, the U.S. was behind a deadly Tomahawk missile strike on an all-girls Iranian elementary school. The late February strike on the Shajarah Tayyebeh elementary school building, which killed more than 170 people, was caused by a U.S. military targeting error, per The New York Times.
“This is where — what we’ve got. The words of the president of the United States are terribly important in moments like this,” he added. “And, unfortunately, President Trump has, uses loose language all the time, didn’t ever come to the American people on this war of choice and say what our goals are, and we still don’t know other than the four goals he outlined.”
American forces were carrying out strikes on an Iranian base that had once included the school grounds. Centcom officers made target coordinates for the strike with outdated data from the Defense Intelligence Agency, sources said, according to the Times.
Last Wednesday, 46 mostly Democratic senators sent a letter to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, pressing him for information on the bombing of the school.
“There must be a swift investigation into the strikes on this school and any other potential U.S. military actions causing civilian harm, and the findings must be released to the public as soon as possible, along with any measures to pursue accountability,” the group of senators wrote.
The Hill has reached out to the White House for comment.
