Most Americans opposed to Trump signature on money: Poll

Most Americans are against having President Trump’s signature on paper currency, a move the Treasury Department announced last month.

In the The Economist/YouGov poll, 59 percent of respondents said they either “somewhat disapprove” or “strongly disapprove” when it comes to “Donald Trump’s signature being added to all U.S. paper currency.”

Twenty-four percent said they either “strongly approve” or “somewhat approve” when it comes to the president’s signature being added to paper currency, while 18 percent were unsure about the addition.

Broken down by party, 92 percent of Democrats, 65 percent of independents and 20 percent of Republicans were against the signature addition in the poll.

The Treasury Department announced in late March that it would put Trump’s signature on paper currency in commemoration of the U.S.’s 250th birthday, the first time a sitting president’s signature will appear on currency.

“There is no more powerful way to recognize the historic achievements of our great country and President Donald J. Trump than U.S. dollar bills bearing his name, and it is only appropriate that this historic currency be issued at the Semiquincentennial,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a previous statement.

The Commission of Fine Arts (CFA) also previously approved a $1 gold coin featuring Trump’s likeness in honor of the 250th celebration.

“Under President Trump’s leadership, we are on a path toward unprecedented economic growth, lasting dollar dominance, and fiscal strength and stability,”  Bessent said.

The Economist/YouGov poll took place between April 10 and 13, featuring 1,748 respondents and a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
