More than half of Americans oppose US military force for Cuban regime change: Poll

More than half of Americans are against the use of their country’s military force for regime change in Cuba, with President Trump recently making threats of taking over the island nation.

In The Economist/YouGov poll, 53 percent of respondents said they “somewhat oppose” or “strongly oppose” American military force for a regime change in Cuba.

Twenty-three percent in the poll said they “strongly support” or “somewhat support” military force for a regime change in Cuba, while 23 percent were unsure about the use of military force.

On Monday, President Trump said he believed he will have the “honor” of taking over Cuba, with his administration putting pressure on Havana via a fuel blockade. The president did not shoot down the possibility of a military move, saying “I think I can do anything I want with” Cuba.

“Whether I free it, take it, I think I can do anything I want with it,” he said. “You want to know the truth, they’re a very weakened nation now.”

Trump’s comments come amid the U.S.’s ongoing conflict against Iran, which has also had low approval in recent polling among Americans. Throughout his second term, Trump’s administration has undertaken dramatic and controversial foreign policy moves, including capturing Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and a push to acquire Greenland.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel on Tuesday pledged “impregnable resistance” due to renewed threats from Trump to take control of his country.

“The US publicly threatens #Cuba, almost daily, with overthrowing the constitutional order by force,” Díaz-Canel wrote on the social platform X.

“And it uses an outrageous pretext: the harsh limitations of the weakened economy that they have attacked and sought to isolate for more than six decades,” he continued.

The Economist/YouGov poll took place from March 13 to 16, featuring 1,595 people and a margin of error of plus or minus 3.3 percentage points.
