Mueller, who led 2016 election interference probe tied to Russia, dies at 81
Former special counsel Robert Mueller, who led the Russian interference probe tied to the 2016 presidential election and President Trump’s campaign, has died at the age of 81, according to a statement from his family.
“With deep sadness, we are sharing the news that Bob passed away” on Friday night, his family said in a statement shared with The Associated Press on Saturday. “His family asks that their privacy be respected.”
Mueller was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease several years ago, though his cause of death was not immediately known. News of his death was first reported by MS NOW.
He took the reins as the head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) just one week before the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and oversaw the agency for 12 years. He was nominated by former President George W. Bush.
Trump posted on Truth Social on Saturday afternoon he was “glad he’s dead.”
“Robert Mueller just died,” he wrote. “Good, I’m glad he’s dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people!”
