Abortion is an economic issue Republicans aren’t ready to face
Republicans are wildly out of touch with the American people when it comes to abortion access, so now they’ve decided to just stop talking about it.
New research from Reproductive Freedom for All shows why that won’t work — voters connect reproductive freedom to the economic pressures that weigh on their shoulders every day.
Planning a family is one of the biggest personal and financial decisions a person will make in their lifetime. New research shows that 82 percent of voters say it has gotten harder to afford to raise children compared to five or ten years ago — and more than half say it is much harder. Nearly three in four say their personal financial situation is a major factor in deciding whether to have a child.
The costs they name are straightforward: housing, childcare, healthcare, education. People are delaying starting families because they are trying to build the stability needed to take on that responsibility — finishing school, establishing their careers, and creating a foundation for the future.
Voters understand that deciding when to have a child is deliberate. Reproductive freedom — from access to contraception and family planning to paid leave policies that let parents stay in the workforce after having a child — is what allows people to build a solid foundation.
For too long, candidates have been told they have to pick a lane: talk about the economy or talk about abortion. But voters are not picking lanes.
