Roblox to roll out new age-based accounts, parental controls
(NewsNation) — Roblox, a popular gaming app, announced Monday it is introducing new age-based accounts and expanded parental controls for users under 16.
The new age-based accounts are called “Roblox Kids” for users 5 to 8 years old and “Roblox Select” for users 9 to 15 years old.
“When they roll out in early June, these accounts will more closely align content access, communication settings, and parental controls with a user’s age,” the company said in a press release. “We’re also establishing an ongoing selection process for games available to users under 16.”
How will the accounts work?
For Roblox Kids accounts, the company said access will be limited to games with a “Minimal or Mild content maturity label” that have passed its three-step selection process. The accounts will also have communication features disabled by default and the design layout will have a distinct background color to indicate the type of account it is.
Meanwhile, the ages of users for the Roblox Select accounts will be determined through the company’s universal age-check system or by a verified parent and will be limited to games with content maturity levels “up to and including Moderate.” Default communications settings will remain unchanged for ages 9-15.
How will expanded parental controls work?
With the update to parental controls, Roblox said parents will be able to block specific games and manage direct chat settings through age 15.
In addition, parents will be able to approve access to specific games that are not under the default setting of their child’s account type.
Push to address safety concerns
TechCrunch reports that the move comes after Roblox implemented mandatory age checks in January for all users who want to access chats on the app.
The gaming app has come under scrutiny in recent months after public data revealed the platform flagged more than 13,000 attempts to exploit minors in 2023. Predators are accused of using Roblox in-game currency to coerce and manipulate kids into unwanted sexual acts. In response, Los Angeles County filed a civil lawsuit against the platform.
Roblox said that in addition to parental controls, it would add new layers of protection, including AI-powered technology that can verify a user’s age, which could help keep kids from accessing explicit material.
