1 dead, dozens injured in explosion at Staten Island shipyard: officials

STATEN ISLAND (WPIX) — One person has died after a fire and two explosions Friday at a New York City shipyard, officials say.

Officials said 35 people were injured, most of them firefighters and other first responders, and one civilian died at the scene.

FDNY received a call at 3:27 p.m. about a fire that happened at 3075 Richmond Terrace in Staten Island. People were reported to be trapped in a confined space, according to officials.

“This was a complex, fast-developing emergency situation,” New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said during a press conference Friday evening.

Officials say a fire developed in the basement of a metal structure in the rear of the shipping docks.
