Hasan Piker’s influence on Democrats questioned before the midterms
How long have Democrats dreamed of a voice on social media able to reach young men with their progressive message?
Well, be careful what you wish for. It might lead to Democrats attacking Democrats.
Hasan Piker, a left-wing streamer on the Twitch platform, has millions watching. They include Democrats and Democrat-aligned groups who loudly criticize him as “anti-American, anti-women, anti-Western, and antisemitic.”
But Piker’s breakout media success is based on shouting an uncensored show of “frustration with the failures of establishment liberalism.”
He is the face of young rebellious progressives who want their elected officials to show more fire and better challenge President Trump’s war with Iran, as well as Israel’s actions in Gaza. He is demanding strong action by Democrats on the affordability crisis.
These are issues that will define the party going into the midterms as well as the 2028 presidential election, and Piker is talking about them every day, especially criticism of Israel.
That’s where the warning lights start flashing.
Republicans are already posting videos of moderate Democrats who criticize Piker as an extremist. Piker calls himself a Marxist and expresses a preference for Hamas as “a thousand times better” than Israel. The Republican media machine is calling attention to Democrats who refuse to condemn Piker.
Piker’s stand as a Democratic booster is beginning to look like General Custer’s stand at the Battle of the Little Bighorn — a man on a mission doomed to failure.
To win elections, Democrats need social media voices to energize their base and produce a big turnout on Election Day.
