Gayle King is staying with CBS News, which is going under a major transformation under Paramount and its billionaire owners Larry and David Ellison.
King, who has been with CBS since 2011, agreed to a new deal with the network this week and joked in a statement to The Hill “rumors of my demise were inaccurate and greatly exaggerated.”
The anchor was referencing reports she was eyeing an exit from CBS after it implemented controversial journalist Bari Weiss as its new editor in chief.
Weiss has overseen a slew of changes at the network and taken heat internally over her handling of stories seen as critical of President Trump’s administration.
David Ellison, as his media company Skydance purchased Paramount last year, vowed to retool CBS’ editorial strategy to appeal to a more “diverse” political audience, a promise many observers have taken as rightward shift.
“CBS News is my longtime home, and I am committed to our mission,” King said. “I’m excited about continuing at CBS Mornings.”
“As always, I’m open to new adventures here and ready to go. It took a minute, but we got there. And now that we are here, I am all in,” she added.
Weiss, in a statement of her own praised the longtime news anchor saying, “there is only one Gayle King.”
“We’re so proud that she’ll continue to call CBS home,” she continued. “We’re thrilled to have her on in the morning—and equally excited to work with her on new, enterprising projects that bring her talents to new audiences.”
