FCC seeks public comment on live sports broadcasting marketplace

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is soliciting public comment on consumer experience with live sports viewing in the streaming era.

As part of a notice posted on Wednesday, the department said, “watching your favorite sports team play is not as easy these days,” and argued “sports remain inherently local, despite the increasingly national nature and reach of both professional and college sports events.”

“Many games are still available for free over broadcast TV, but there has been a surge in recent years of games going behind the paywalls of various streaming services,” the FCC continued in its notice. “While this can increase the number of games and sports available to fans, many consumers today find it more difficult to find the events they want to watch and are now paying to sign up for one or more video distribution platforms that consumers can find difficult to navigate.”

The Brendan Carr-led regulator said it is “important for us to evaluate the sports media landscape and understand how changes have impacted consumers and broadcasters.”

The inquiry comes as more major media companies are shifting live sports programming away from linear broadcast channels and toward streaming.

At the same time, major tech firms like Netflix, Amazon and Apple have struck multi-billion-dollar deals with leagues like the NFL, MLB and NBA to broadcast games.

No sports league has been more popular or profitable for major broadcasters than the NFL, which aired games aired on 10 different services last year and according to some estimates cited by the FCC, could cost a consumer over $1,500 to watch all games.

“We want to understand the marketplace today, the experience of consumers, and how the changes impact the ability of broadcast TV stations to continue delivering local news, information, and other programming,” Carr wrote in a social media post about the notice.

All public comments are due to the FCC by March 27.
