‘Hockey’ and ‘World Cup’ references top Kalshi odds on Trump’s State of the Union address

Prediction market Kalshi is anticipating President Trump will make several references to sports issues during his State of the Union address Tuesday.

The oddsmaker is predicting a 93 percent chance Trump says the words “Olympics” or “World Cup” during his speech while “hockey” specifically has a 90 percent chance.

Other top odds include “250” in connection with the administration’s America 250 project and “stock market” as Trump is expected to tout his economic agenda during his first term.

The U.S. men’s hockey team has dominated news headlines in recent days following a 2-1 victory over Canada in Sunday’s gold medal game in Milan. Trump called the team after Sunday’s win to congratulate them and invite them to Tuesday’s address.

Kalshi is one of several rising internet-based prediction markets that has grown in the United States in recent years along with the explosion of sports gambling and fantasy sports.

Some lawmakers have raised concern about the risks associated with prediction markets, which unlike sportsbooks allow users to directly impact the outcome of certain current events.

Last week, Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Chair Michael Selig, turned some heads in Washington when he vowed to help defend the markets from state attempts to regulate them, which he argued infringes on the CFTC’s “exclusive jurisdiction” over the platforms.

A group of Democratic senators wrote to Selig arguing prediction market contracts could “further risk incentivizing real-world harm by creating financial rewards linked to destabilizing events or physical injury, and by encouraging actors to influence or precipitate those outcomes for personal profit.”
