Trump put to the test with Mills in Florida primary fight

President Trump’s endorsement is being put to the test again this week as Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.) vies for a third term while multiple controversies threaten to derail the congressman’s reelection bid.

Mills has been under investigation since November, with the House Ethics Committee looking into allegations that the congressman violated campaign finance laws and engaged in sexual misconduct, among other accusations.

The panel is also investigating an incident in which a woman reported to police that Mills had assaulted her before later recanting her statement. Mills has denied any wrongdoing in those cases.

The president notably backed Mills in February, calling him “an America First Patriot and Tremendous Champion for the Great People of Florida’s 7th Congressional District!” while several prominent Florida Republicans have backed one of his three challengers or stayed out of the race.

Trump has not rescinded his endorsement, but in a likely nod to the primary’s changing tides, the president’s recent advertisement of Florida primary endorsements excluded the congressman. The Hill has reached out to the White House for comment.

“Mills is clearly going to be helped to some extent by Trump’s endorsement, but it does seem like Trump’s endorsement is not a guarantee of overcoming your own myriad issues,”........
