ICE detains San Diego Padres catching coordinator in El Paso

A minor-league catching coordinator for the San Diego Padres was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Tuesday at the airport while attempting to travel home. 

Authorities say Oswaldo Jose Pirela Dominguez, an immigrant from Venezuela, entered the country legally in 2014 and was granted authorization to stay until 2018. 

Dominguez’s family says he applied for asylum but has been waiting to have his case processed for years.

“Oswaldo, like me and other members of our family, was directly affected by persecution from the Venezuelan regime. We came to the United States seeking safety through the legal process, applied for asylum through the proper channels, and have worked hard to build our lives and become contributing members of American society,” his brother, Jorge Heli Pirela wrote in a post on Instagram.
