Inflation in May was bad. These 7 things got way more expensive

(NEXSTAR) – In case your credit card statement hadn’t already made it clear, new federal data confirmed it on Wednesday: Inflation is back.

Inflation reached its highest level in three years in May, the Labor Department announced. Consumer prices rose 4.2% in May from a year earlier, up from 3.8% in April and the third straight monthly increase.

This time it wasn’t grocery prices spiraling out of control, though the cost of food is rising. The category seeing the biggest price inflation is energy.

Fuel oil is up 59% and gasoline is up 41% when compared to this time last year. Relatedly, airline fares are also up 27%.

The cost of new and used cars hasn’t been affected, however. Those prices are flat or even slightly lower than last spring.

A few other, more niche things also saw especially high........
