Year-round daylight saving time coming to Canada province after ‘recent actions’ by US

(NEXSTAR) – Some of our neighbors to the north will soon observe a practice several state and federal lawmakers have been pushing for: year-round daylight saving time.

On Monday, the Province of British Columbia – which shares a border with Alaska, Washington, Idaho, and Montana – announced it will change its clocks for the final time on Sunday. The province said regions that observe Mountain time instead of Pacific time will not be impacted. It joins the provinces of Yukon and most of Saskatchewan in abandoning the twice-annual changing of the clocks.

In a press release, the government said the move would “improve people’s overall health, reduce disruptions for families, simplify scheduling and provide an extra hour of evening light during the winter months.”

State and federal lawmakers in the U.S. have used the same arguments in calls for permanent daylight saving time, though health experts (including a study cited by the British Columbia government) and history don’t necessarily agree with them. Efforts to enact year-round daylight saving time have largely stalled in the U.S., while 19 states await federal approval to make the move.

Monday’s release noted that British Columbia has had the legal standing to enact permanent daylight saving time since 2019, but opted not to “in order to coordinate timing with neighbouring U.S. states in the same time zone.”

“Recent actions from the U.S. have shifted how [British Columbia] approaches decisions that merit alignment, including on time zones,” the release continued. “Making this change now reflects the current preferences and needs of British Columbians, and helps ensure the province is well-positioned to thrive, even when circumstances across the border evolve.”

The press release didn’t elaborate on the “recent actions from the U.S.,” but noted that Washington, Oregon, and California have considered or enacted similar legislation for permanent daylight saving time. While California voters gave the state legislature permission to lock the clocks, it has yet to do so. Washington and Oregon are among the 19 states that have enacted year-round daylight saving time legislation.

At present, U.S. states can only opt into permanent standard time, as Hawaii and most of Arizona have done.

There are five bills in Congress that could upend the seasonal time change. Two bills, companion legislation introduced in the House and the Senate, would put the U.S. on year-round daylight saving time. Two others would allow states to decide if they want to observe permanent daylight saving time. A recently introduced bill would enact permanent half-daylight saving time.

All five remain in committee as of early March.

For now, if you live in the U.S. (minus Hawaii and Arizona) or British Columbia, your clocks will jump ahead an hour on Sunday, March 8. For much of the U.S., clocks will fall back again on Sunday, November 1.
