The signing of a trilateral Joint Security and Defence Pact between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye at the Makkah Summit marks one of the most consequential geopolitical developments in the broader Middle East and West Asia in recent years. While summit declarations often produce ambitious rhetoric that later fades into diplomatic obscurity, this agreement appears different. By transforming long-standing political goodwill and bilateral military cooperation into a formal trilateral security framework, the three countries have signalled their intention to reshape the regional strategic landscape.

At its core, the pact establishes a principle of collective security: an attack on one member will be treated as an attack on all three. Such commitments have historically carried enormous strategic weight. They serve not merely as declarations of solidarity but as deterrents, raising the costs for any external actor contemplating military coercion or aggression against a member state.

For Pakistan, the agreement represents the culmination of decades of close military cooperation with Saudi Arabia. The armed forces of both countries have worked together through training programmes, intelligence sharing, joint exercises and defence consultations for many years. Their relationship has been distinguished by mutual trust and an understanding that regional stability is a shared interest. Türkiye's entry into this framework significantly expands both its geographic reach and strategic relevance. Ankara possesses one of NATO's largest and most capable militaries, a sophisticated indigenous defence industry and considerable operational experience across multiple theatres.
