The competition to see who the most shallow, feckless Republican in the U.S. Senate can be tight. But somehow, Alaska’s Lisa Murkowski always finds a way to come out on top.
The Last Frontier State’s senior senator announced on Friday that she will be joining her pal Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, in opposing Todd Blanche’s attorney general nomination. In typical Murkowski fashion, her reasons ranged from utter incoherence to outright dishonesty.
In one breath, she praises Blanche as someone who “comes across as decent and capable.” Then, in the very next, she insinuates that he would abandon those attributes by going back on his decision to rescind the now-defunct anti-weaponization fund after his Senate confirmation.
Perhaps the most egregious part of Murkowski’s diatribe, however, is the part in which she laughably claims that the “politicization” and “even weaponization” of the Justice Department “did not start with this administration but has accelerated during it” (emphasis added).
