The madness of sacking climate scientists

Just read this from The Washington Post: "The Trump administration said Tuesday it was breaking up one of the world's preeminent Earth and atmospheric research institutions, based in Colorado, over concerns about 'climate alarmism'."

Or these paragraphs from The New York Times: "The Environmental Protection Agency has quietly removed the fact that human activity is driving climate change from a handful of pages on its website."

And: "The Environmental Protection Agency plans to eliminate its scientific research arm, firing as many as 1155 chemists, biologists, toxicologists and other scientists."

Now raise your jaw from the floor. Calm down. Take a deep breath.

In the madness which has infected America, it's hard to understand why a government would want to get rid of scientists who delivered scientific knowledge derived through rigorous research. Science delivers knowledge and it's hard to see why knowledge should be a problem.

Ignorance is not bliss. All but the ignorant know that.

We can argue about how we deal with climate change. We can disagree about the speed of reducing our carbon footprint. We have different views on nuclear power. We can make different assumptions about how fast or slow technological advance might come to the rescue.

But what no intelligent person can do - or so you might think - is doubt that climate change is happening and that its prime cause is humans burning carbon fuels.

And I don't speak as a dyed in the wool greenie. In fact, I'm quite sceptical about the stance of much of the green movement. To me, climate change is real and needs to be addressed - but with a recognition that ordinary people need to live lives with ease of travel and with affordable electricity. I sometimes feel that green activists won't be happy until we are all trudging round on bikes and eating organic gruel. My bike days are over.

But doubting science seems to be madness - and that's because it is.

Unless there's something else going on.

There is a theory that President Donald Trump understands only money. He sees Ukraine as about exploitable resources and about getting Russia back into the trading system because that would offer American business -........
