JIM SPENCE: There is so much to love and appreciate about Dundee

Dundee has its critics but it’s my spiritual home and sanctuary.

Working in Jersey for six months before I was married cured me of wanderlust.

When I was at the BBC, my boss offered me the chance to move to Glasgow but frankly there was nothing that the birthplace of my old granny could offer that my home city couldn’t, so I had limited interest in the offer.

We did have an inquisitive gander at some houses in the dear green place.

But when a builders’ representative nervously enquired which school any children might attend, and I had to explain to my wife that we were being asked whether we were Catholic or Protestant (and we are one of each), that put the tin lid on any notion of a move.

Dundee was then and remains pretty much free of an issue which has bedevilled Glasgow and the west coast.
