There is a familiar way of seeing Ladakh, with mountain passes, Buddhist monasteries perched on cliffs, turquoise lakes and long highways winding through the Himalayas. 

Every summer, thousands travel to Ladakh to chase those landscapes.

This August, however, the landscape is telling a different art story.

Until 10 August 2026, stretches of the 230-kilometre Leh–Kargil corridor have become an open-air exhibition where mountains, villages and ancient trade routes double as galleries. 

Across eight locations, the inaugural sā Ladakh Biennale is transforming one of India's highest inhabited regions into the world's highest regenerative art biennale.

Held at elevations above 3,000 metres, the biennale departs from the conventional idea of an art exhibition enclosed within museum walls. 

Instead, the artworks are spread across Leh, Basgo, Likir, Nurla, Lamayuru, Heniskot, Mulbekh and Kargil, where the surrounding landscape becomes as much a part of the experience as the installations........
