Swindon Town's false back three creates path to the future

Swindon Town have landed on a new formation which has fuelled an impressive winning run and created a possibility for the future.

Ian Holloway has been very flexible with how he has set Swindon up since taking over in late October, switching between systems based upon his personnel and the opposition, although he has largely favoured a switch towards a 4231 system, which helped power the push away from the bottom.

But with injuries stretching the squad late in the season, they pulled off a remarkable run of four straight wins, over four teams with aspirations for promotion places, having moved to what is ostensibly a back three.

The 4-0 win over Grimsby Town was possibly the apotheosis of the entire season, as a complete performance saw them blow The Mariners out of the water. After the match, Holloway spoke about his pleasure with being able to exploit the way Grimsby defended to build through the thirds.
