Swindon Town going top means nothing but it was important
Swindon Town’s early-season form does not mean anything yet, but there was a symbolic significance to going top of the pile at Barrow.
For 30 glorious minutes, prior to Gillingham being spoilsports and kicking off at Bromley, Swindon were top of League Two on Saturday. After a few early struggles with the disembarkation of the HMS-you-know-what, starting with flickers against Shrewsbury Town and a roaring flame against Crewe Alexandra, Swindon are on their way.
We have seen fast starts before. Michael Flynn’s ‘Boys of Summer’ went undefeated for nine games, picking up 19 points in that time and headed to Notts County in October for a match between third and first in the division. Swindon even had a game in hand. That year also ended up being the worst in the history of the club.
This is not to say that I believe the same thing will happen. There was always an element of dancing on top of a volcano about that team, from the style of play to the lack of depth, but it is to illustrate that August football........
