Swindon suggest better public transport options around town

Discussions about mass transit solutions for Swindon prompted a lot of debate among Adver readers.

Councillors discussed the ways to improve public transport around the town as part of the Local Plan to grow and develop the borough over the next 20 years after it was raised by Cllr Daniel Adams.

Does Swindon need a tram, more train stations, or a monorail?

Daniel Adams said: “Given it was me that asked the question its worth elaborating.

“Given a 10-20 year-plus plan is being formulated, it’s worth looking forward to a point where Swindon’s population is 300k and more formalised alternatives to cars should be being explored, especially given they generally need outside funding.

“A second or third railways station for the town would be a great idea in my opinion but given they take decades to deliver, then SBC and our MPs need to start those discussions now.

“[The train station] needs to be opened up both sides, two entrances and parking on both sides.

“The land either side should be sold by Network Rail to fund the refurbishment by building flats with quick access to the station.”
