Swindon Town reach crossroads for true League Two challenge
As starts to new seasons go, let’s call this one mixed. With a couple of hard-fought wins and tough-to-take defeats apiece, any armchair pundits wishing to decisively tell which way the wind is blowing needs to wait at least a little while longer.
In spite of the early-season ambiguity, it seems fairly clear that Swindon Town both have a reasonable base on which to launch a promotion bid and also plenty of work left to do if any of that promise is to become reality.
Finishing the squad build will be key in that. So far, it’s been a summer of evolution rather than revolution, something I actively wanted a few months ago.
A large portion of the squad from the previous campaign remains, while we have seen a selection of incoming signings. That mixture of tried and tested League Two performers and promising academy players from higher up the pyramid all seems very sensible, and we are tentatively seeing the squad settle in and grow together.
But that evolution is maybe not quite as advanced as we’d like, with a couple of weeks of the transfer window left.
