TORONTO — By the time the Toronto Blue Jays return to action, active rosters will have expanded from 26 to 28, giving managers a little more flexibility to make moves late in games.

At least one of the newcomers will have to be a position player, with the other spot likely going to a pitcher. Adding to the intrigue, the Blue Jays are about to play the Cleveland Guardians, who are now just 1.5 games ahead of them for the third and final American League wild-card berth. 

While the details haven’t been finalized, the Blue Jays spent time this weekend working through some September call-up scenarios. 

“I wish I could give you a clear-cut answer, but there are a lot of moving pieces,” manager John Schneider said. “There are guys that we've seen before, guys that we like, and there's just a lot of moving pieces, so we’ve got to figure out how it all works. But it's nice to have a handful of options.”
