Quiet perseverance, and other lessons from Ryne Sandberg
One of the most gratifying — and equally challenging — things in life is doing something that’s never been done before. Whether it’s an athletic, academic or professional accomplishment, these moments are symbols of personal growth and important milestones for all of us. They require skill, confidence and determination every time we break through one of life’s barriers.
That feeling of actually doing it — followed by the euphoria of mastering it — has been a foundational part of my life. As I reflect on where I gained that will, strength and perseverance, one person stands out as my inspiration in these moments: my childhood hero, Ryne Sandberg.
Growing up in Chicago in the 1980s, we had many stars to admire. But no one embodied the idea of doing something that had never been done before more than Ryno.
