Are criminals getting a free pass? Most crimes in Gwent don't lead to a charge
Only around one in 10 crimes in Gwent lead to a charge or caution, leading one politician to claim criminals are being given a "free pass".
Gwent Police admits the vast majority of offences reported lead to no charge or caution, but argue that the crimes are not 'unsolved'.
It says that between June 2024 and May 2025, 58,878 crimes were recorded and just 10.7 per cent led to a 'criminal justice outcome' such as a charge or caution.
Reform's Laura Anne Jones, who South Wales East region in the Senedd, slammed the figures, saying both rural and urban communities were being failed and that victims were being left feeling abandoned.
Ms Jones said: "From farming equipment theft in Monmouthshire’s villages to mass brawls in Newport’s streets, people tell me they no longer feel safe.........
