After 17 years, Christian Bale's California housing village is close to opening

Actor Christian Bale has quietly added a new job title to his already impressive resume: home builder in California. “The Dark Knight” star co-founded a project called Together California to build a housing complex for foster youth in Los Angeles County, and it’s finally close to completion.

The 4.7-acre village in Palmdale, in the high desert northeast of Los Angeles, will contain 12 homes, a 7,000-square-foot community center and open space for gardens and recreational areas. The first four homes should open by December or January, said Tim McCormick, executive director of Together California, in an interview with SFGATE.

When Bale’s daughter Emmeline was 3 years old, he began to wonder what happened to kids who didn’t have parents to care for them. He did some research on the foster care system and found two startling facts: 75% of foster children are taken away from their siblings when they’re put into foster care, and LA County had the highest........
