Kyle Shanahan's first challenge of the year saves 49ers star's incredible play
Fred Warner of the San Francisco 49ers celebrates a fumble recovery against the New Orleans Saints during the second half in the game at Caesars Superdome on Sept. 14, 2025 in New Orleans.
Kyle Shanahan hasn’t had the greatest track record with challenges as San Francisco 49ers head coach over the years. But his first challenge of 2025 made Niners star Fred Warner’s incredible turnover count — and may have changed the momentum in the 26-21 win over the Saints.
New Orleans was driving into San Francisco territory while down 19-14 late in the third quarter when running back Alvin Kamara made an acrobatic catch against his head while fighting to avoid 49ers safety Ja’ayir Brown’s tackle. In one motion, Warner punched the ball out of Kamara’s hands, rolled onto the turf and made a no-look grab of the loose football above his head.
