With the bustle of living and working in urban San Francisco, it’s easy to forget how close we are to nature. So, my wife and I headed south on Sunday to the new Skyline Watershed Ridge Trail in San Mateo County to reconnect with the outdoors and get out of the city’s foggy west side.

The new trail hugs Skyline Boulevard in the coastal hills straddling the Pacific and the bay side of the Peninsula. The views were magnificent.

The trailhead is off the intersection of Highway 92 and Skyline Boulevard. When we got there, the 25-space parking lot was full. We had to park down the road on Skyline. A new trail in previously closed-off Bay Area wilderness is a big draw.

It took us an hour to hike the first 3 miles of the winding 6-mile trail. Between canopies of trees, the trail opens to........
