In the Bay Area, sticking to sports is impossible with Super Bowl LX

The choice of Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny, seen performing in Mexico City in December, to headline the Super Bowl LX  Halftime Show doesn’t sit well with President Donald Trump and MAGA.

There was a time when it was rare for sports and politics to mix.

That time is long gone.

This was evident from the moment in September when Bad Bunny was announced as the Super Bowl LX Halftime Show headliner. The choice of a Puerto Rican performer who sings mostly in Spanish was denounced by President Donald Trump and the MAGA crowd as un-American.

“I’m anti-them. I think it’s a terrible choice. All it does is sow hatred. Terrible,” Trump recently told the New York Post, referring to Bad Bunny and Green Day, the Bay Area punk band that is also performing during the halftime show. Both have been vocal critics of Trump.

Turning Point USA, the group Charlie Kirk headed, was so incensed by the choice of Bad Bunny that it announced plans for an alternative “All-American Halftime Show” that, you know, is not in Spanish. Turning Point said on Monday that country musicians Kid Rock, Brantley Gilbert, Lee Brice and Gabby Barrett would headline its show.

You may have most recently seen Kid Rock in a video shooting cases of Bud Light to protest the beer brand’s short-lived marketing partnership with a transgender influencer.

“We plan to play great songs for folks who love America,” Kid Rock said in a statement released by Turning Point.
