Gas and diesel prices are setting records for this time of year — and there's no relief in sight

The national average for regular gas hit $4.03 a gallon on Wednesday, the highest ever recorded this late in the calendar year

Gas prices climbed to a record seasonal high on Wednesday, with the national average for regular unleaded reaching $4.03 a gallon, according to Bloomberg. Diesel averaged $5.40 a gallon in the same period — also a record for mid-August.

Patrick De Haan, GasBuddy's head of petroleum research, wrote on X $TWTR that the national average "has never been above $4/gal after Aug. 12 in any previous year........
