The Book Is the Boss for a Writer of Immense Imagination
A bit like one of those Russian nested dolls, Guillermo Stitch's latest novel keeps surprising the reader. Stories within stories take the forms of science fiction, mystery, and more, all blending and bleeding together in unexpected ways.
Curious about Stitch's writing process for such a demanding project, I asked him a few questions and he responded between flights on his European book tour.
Susan K. Perry: Your newest book, The Coast of Everything, is 747 pages long, and I wonder how many revisions it went through. Many writers seem to think that one or two revisions are plenty. I have to suppose that your publisher weighed in.
Guillermo Stitch: The editorial process for the book was complex, making this question difficult to answer. There were editorial sweeps on each narrative element of the book (there are five, arguably six, distinct elements or strands) both during that element’s writing and upon its completion.
This involved trusted readers alongside me—some constants but also some new readers chosen each time for compatibility with genre.
