AI Is Changing How Children Learn—Parents Need to Pay Attention

Struggling is part of learning.

Teach children to use AI as a tool and not a substitute for thinking.

Undoubtedly, artificial intelligence (AI) has changed the way our children learn. As if they weren’t already struggling with delaying gratification, now, by typing a few words into a box, our kids are getting answers to homework, essays written for them, books summarized, and problems solved in just a few seconds. Our children are turning to AI instead of thinking, and that is a big area of concern for a parent.

When you think about the learning process, it’s not just about getting the right answer. Instead, it’s about learning how to learn, building awareness of how a person learns, making mistakes, figuring out another way to approach the problem, and trying again. With AI, this entire process is eliminated, and our children have answers that they can submit to satisfy an assignment, but the steps in between that build the ability to think, self-reflect, and assess are gone.

AI gets in the way of independent thinking

Our children develop thinking skills by reading the information, thinking about the information, thinking about different ways to look at a problem, and engaging in trial and error. When AI gets involved, an answer or perspective is provided rather than giving a chance for an opinion to be formulated based on information.
