The war has to do with the way your attention is being pulled in every direction without you realizing it.

You can take steps to reclaim your attention and win the war.

As a scientist who has studied the science of happiness for over 20 years, I can tell you there's a quiet war being waged on your happiness—and most people aren't even aware of it.

On the surface, the pings and notifications on your phone feel like tiny moments of joy. They can bring good news, reminders, and a fun update. It can be nice to feel digitally connected to your friends and family, and the influencers or hobbies you keep up with online.

But beneath that surface lies a quieter, more insidious battle, one that I researched deeply in writing my latest book, Sovereign—a war on your happiness and well-being that you might not even realize you’re fighting.

Each message you read, whether you realize it or not, triggers an emotional response, whether it’s excitement, annoyance, or the stress of adding another task to your to-do list.
